Friends, I rarely post a guest article on my blog, but I feel compelled to share this one.
You may be familiar with Rob Weiss, the author of several books including Sex Addiction 101: A Basic Guide to Healing from Sex, Love, and Porn Addiction, and Cruise Control: Understanding Sex Addiction in Gay Men. He is the Senior Vice President of National Clinical Development for Elements Behavioral Health.
Rob is also a courageous, openly gay recovering sex addict — and a tireless spokesperson for our field.
He recently wrote an article —Sex and Porn Addictions: Misconceptions and Bias — for PsychCentral blog in response to a backlash from a small minority of mental health professionals to the concept of sex addiction and traditional treatments for compulsive sexual behavior.
Sadly, some in the sex therapy and sexology field have spent inordinate amounts of time and effort attempting to discredit the notion of sex addiction and sex addiction treatment — to the detriment of addicts who need solid, tested information and support. These critics have also attempted to spread misinformation, including the claim that IITAP Certified Sex Addiction Therapists practice reparative or conversion therapy for gay clients who are uncomfortable with their sexual orientation. This is simply untrue.
You can read Rob’s entire article here on the PsychCentral blog: Sex and Porn Addictions: Misconceptions and Bias
